Presstek 34DI® Builds Bridge to Success for Monkymax

Presstek, Inc., a leading manufacturer and marketer of digital offset printing solutions, today announced that Monkymax Printing, located in Burnaby, B.C., has founded a growing business built around the capabilities of the Presstek 34DI digital offset press.

Monkymax was founded by Monika Cheng and Ricky Cheng and their son, Max, at the end of 2008, becoming operational in early 2009. Ricky Cheng explains, “I have been involved with the printing industry for 15 years, and I clearly saw a need for a set of services that would bridge the production gap between toner-based digital printing and conventional offset. With our new Presstek DI press, we are competitively producing work in runs as low as 100 up to 10,000 to 20,000.” Cheng saw an increasing demand for full-color printing, but adds, “At the same time, people are watching what they spend and cutting back on quantities. They also like to order in lower quantities because of the need to frequently change content for consolidation of school loans.”

Although Cheng admits it is an unusual time to start a new business, he and his family have been pleased with the market response to his new company. Cheng is a firm believer that difficult economic times call for an increase in marketing efforts so that your company can stand out from the others. This is a practice he is using in his business and one he is encouraging his customers to adopt as well.

“In the past, I had a lot of dealings with small to mid-sized printers, designers and print brokers,” Cheng says. “I have found great receptivity among that trade audience, and it has given me a jump start in terms of getting the business running. I’m in this business for the long haul, and will also be selling directly to end users in the future.”

Cheng chose the Presstek 34DI press because of its ease of operation and all-in-one capability that includes on-press platemaking. As the owner/operator, he knew he would have to operate the press himself, and wanted a solution that would allow him to process jobs quickly without the delays associated with conventional platemaking. “The efficiency of the press translates into the final price of the finished product,” he says. “There is less overhead, and I don’t need as much physical space as conventional offset would require. This allows me to deliver a very competitive product to the market.”

Cheng is bullish about the future. He concludes, “Honestly, some people say that print is slowly disappearing. But I find that rather than disappearing, it is simply changing with technology. Everyone still needs printing in some shape or form; they just need it done in a different way. By acquiring the Presstek 34DI press, I can meet those needs in terms of quantity, quality and speed. You just can’t do it with conventional offset anymore.”
